“I am so glad that O’Brien negotiated such a great contract, ’cause I’ll be honest with you: It is needed,” remarked O’Brien.
“The biggest win is finally getting the air-conditioned car,” Rodriguez said, referring to a crucial element of new heat safety precautions that the two parties agreed on.
The Teamsters welcomed the reforms as a huge victory, citing years of complaints that working in hot weather has become increasingly dangerous as climate change feeds extended periods of record-high temperatures across the country.
Under the new agreement, 22.4 drivers would be reclassified as normal drivers, with their pay increased correspondingly.
UPS would also be barred from requiring drivers to work extra hours on their regular days off.
The five-year contract also contains what the union described as “historic” wage increases.
Full- and part-time union workers are guaranteed a $2.75 hourly pay rise this year, totaling a $7.50 hourly increase over the deal’s life.
